City tour Leipzig, 3h, Welcome to the City of Heroes: Discover Leipzig’s Historic Old Town!

June 27th, Start 10:00 am

Immerse yourself in a city of superlatives! Like no other metropolis, Leipzig combines a rich musical history, a centuries-old trade fair tradition, world-class literary heritage, and the courageous spirit of the Peaceful Revolution. Join us on a fascinating walk through the compact and beautiful Old Town and follow in the footsteps of Bach, Goethe, and the heroes of the autumn of ’89.

What awaits you on our tour:

  • The Market Square & Old Town Hall:We start in the pulsating center of the city. Marvel at the magnificent Old Town Hall, built in 1556 in a record time of just nine months, and considered a true jewel of the Renaissance. Discover architectural finesse like the asymmetrical tower built using the “Golden Ratio,” and feel the cosmopolitan flair that historic trade merchants once brought to the city.
  • Mädler Passage & Auerbachs Keller:Experience Leipzig’s unique system of arcades and courtyards. In the luxurious Mädler Passage, you will breathe the architectural splendor of the turn of the century. An absolute highlight is “Auerbachs Keller”—the city’s second-oldest surviving inn. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe enjoyed his student days here, affectionately calling the city his “Little Paris,” and immortalized the vaulted cellar forever in his masterpiece Faust.
  • Thomas Church – The Home of Bach:For classical music fans, we are stepping on holy ground. For no less than 27 years, Johann Sebastian Bach worked here as the Thomaskantor, leading the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir, which is now over 800 years old. Visit the master’s grave in the chancel and learn at the Bach monument in front of the church why the composer’s pockets are turned inside out.
  • Nicholas Church & The Miracle of Leipzig:Our tour leads us to Leipzig’s oldest and largest church, whose interior will surprise you with an unexpected, classicist design featuring palm-like columns. Even more impressive, however, is its historical significance: This is where the Peace Prayers took place, which evolved into the Monday Demonstrations in the autumn of 1989. Learn how 70,000 people armed with candles and the chant “We are the people!” peacefully shook the GDR regime and paved the way for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.
